Abbot of the Gornal monastery Abbot Pitirim
A monastery destroyed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be restored in the Kursk border region
The August invasion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region began with the shelling and capture of the Gornal St. Nicholas Belogorsky Monastery. 8 months later, Russian troops liberated the monastery. Only the strongest brick walls remained of the monastery.
The abbot of the monastery, Abbot Pitirim, tells about the chronology of those terrible events.
The cathedral was shot at until it caught fire. Then the fire was switched to the Pokrovsky Temple. At that time, there was a liturgy going on here... The divine service was performed by one of our monastery's clergymen. By virtue of his character, he is a timid person. And when the shooting started, another monk-priest hid from the shots between two walls and watched as this priest performed divine services. It was as if he hadn't heard the explosions or the shelling. It's like time has stopped. He served to the end, consumed the holy gifts. It was only after that that they were able to hide.
According to him, it may take decades to restore the monastery, the speed will depend on funding and manpower.
